Our Story: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

Founded in 1849 and chosen as Macon County’s seat in 1854, the City of Oglethorpe has long been a cornerstone of Southwest-Central Georgia. Once considered for Georgia’s state capital—missing the honor by just one vote—our city’s history is both rich and colorful. In the 19th century, Oglethorpe flourished as a bustling hub, at times called “the metropolis of the Southeast.” Though early epidemics reshaped our path, the resilience of our people ensured that Oglethorpe remained a proud, close-knit community.
Today, we honor that heritage while looking boldly to the future. With a focus on revitalization, sustainable development, and community engagement, Oglethorpe is creating new opportunities for residents and visitors alike. From preserving historic charm to expanding infrastructure, parks, and public services, our vision is clear: to foster a safe, welcoming, and thriving city that reflects the best of its past while embracing the promise of tomorrow.
